Meeting Notes Friday October 25th, 2024

  • Reported by: Scott Anderson - Secretary
  • From notes by Larry Sorenson and Roy Maynard
  • Photos by Tom Tschida, Roy Maynard & Scott Anderson

This is our first meeting of the 2024-2025 Building season.  The March meeting gathered 24 members and friends to share building stories and plans for the upcoming building season!

Roy Maynard called the meeting to order as Cal Branton and several other members were out of state attending the Dino DiGiorgio Sr. Memorial Warbird Rally at Hodges Field in Georgia.

Dan Schmidt’s ¼ scale Luscombe 8A

Dan brought a 103 inch span ¼ scale Luscombe 8A. built from plans by Pat Tritle (from Brodak.com).  Powered by a Saito 150 with a CH Ignition gasoline conversion.  It features a balsa sheeted fuselage and wings covered with Oratex.  Latex paint was used.

He ordered the corrugation detail for the model that has a 15.5lbs flying weight.

Dan has not flown it yet but is looking for warm weather in the near future!

Dan's aircraft craftsmanship is always bar none, we look forward to seeing it fly!

Joe Neidermayr’s  Avios Super Tucano

Joe shared his latest aircraft acquisition, the Avios Super Tucano from Hobby King.

This model is supplied with Camo scheme in Philippine markings of a Tucano.  It has retracts, flaps and a full LED lighting system.

It flies on a 6s LiPo battery. The gear actually has functional oleo struts.  Joe tells us that the flight performance is quite good!

Thank you Joe!

David P. Andersen’s Lockheed U-2R Project

Dave Andersen again wallpapered the room with his latest project, The Lockheed U-2R. The U-2R plans are a collaboration between David Andersen and Larry Sorenson.  Span is 5 meters (197 inches).  This will have traditional  balsa construction and be turbine powered.

David presented four of the eight sheets that make up the plan set.

These are the first draft, in pencil on vellum paper and include details and scale features shown on color highlights.  Very interesting to see how these plans look before they are finalized.  The design includes four spoilers, four flaps, fuselage speed brakes, droppable wingtip "pogos" (wingtip landing skids) and superpods for the wings.

Larry will be building the first prototype and anticipates a three year timeline!

We will look forward to updates!

Jan Larsen’s Custom Retract for the F-89 Scorpion

Jan shared the work he’s performed in creating a custom/scale nose gear retract for Roy Maynard’s F-89 Scorpion Project.

The Behotec Electric 105 degree nose retract unit with modified strut retract needed to be repositioned and strut shortened to more accurately replicate the original jet.

Jan used CAD to get the changes planned out before fabricating parts to modify the kit.

The retract unit is for Roy’s Air-C-Race F89 scorpion kit.  Jan put everything into CAD to design the strut and retract mount so it would fit properly during extension and retraction of the gear.

A demonstration of the retract was done. The F-89 is seldom modeled; this one is a high quality fiberglass kit from Air-C-Race.

Apologies for the lack of the gear pictures.

TEAM Composite Me-163 Komet ¼ scale Project

Scott Russell shared new 3D-Printed Me-163 Komet fuselage plug. The Komet plug is 1/4 scale, based on knowledge Ahmed, Scott and Jan from 33 and 45 percent versions.  This is designed to fly with an 85 newton turbine or equivalent Scheubler EDF unit.  Dry weight is projected to be 15-16 pounds.

In the pursuit of simplicity and light weight, leading edge slats and inner elevators will likely be omitted.

Vector thrust for yaw will definitely be used for ground handling.  It can be launched using the traditional dolly.  Plans are in the works for a launch rail as well.

Watch for more details as the program progresses!

Roy Maynard’s CompARF AT-6 Project

Roy Maynard brought in his ¼ scale AT-6.  This is a Comp-ARF offering.  It will be fitted with a Moki 250 and ring exhaust with the scale outlet.  Paul LeTourneau built the cockpit which will be housed by a sliding canopy.  The model will have JP electric retracts with Sierra struts.

Roy recently sprayed yellow Klass Kote which is the base for his color scheme. Will be modeled after an AT6 at the tri-state warbird museum in Ohio.

Will be yellow with green anti-glare panels and red cowl, wing and fuselage bands.  The motor and landing gear already mounted.  The scale cockpit is completed.  The plan is to install a scale light system.  Hopefully will get back on the painting in the spring.

Event Report from the 20th Anniversary Dino DiGiorgio Sr. Memorial Warbird Rally

Cal Branton, Opie Logue, Roy Carrigan, were joined by Brian Burcar, Jason (Korky)Kornis, Jeff Quesenberry, Scott & Todd Anderson at Mac Hodges Field near Andersonville, Georgia for a week of Warbird flying Tuesday October 22nd through Saturday October 26th. This is a warbird only event for any size to propulsion as long as the model can take-off/land on the grass runway.

The flight line was quite full when we arrived on Tuesday covering the length of the east-west runway. Over 70 pilots were registered by Wednesday morning with the expectation that more would be arriving Friday & Saturday. The winds all week were light and variable with the majority being crosswind to the runway. Temperatures were in the upper 80’s/lower 90’s and a bit toasty for the Minnesota group.

The field is set up for events like this with electrical hook-ups along the length of the runway.

Cal Branton flew his Macchi 202 and his SBD Dauntless regularly. Roy Carrigan brought the David P. Andersen designed Kawasaki Ki-45 Toryu (Nick) (built by Jeff Quesenberry). Jeff Quesenberry brought his David P. Andersen designed IL2 Sturmovik and his new 1/3rd scale Boeing P-26 Peashooter. Scott Anderson flew his ¼ scale Ryan PT-22 Recruit and ¼ scale Fokker DVII. Other than some minor issues, all flights were successful!

It was a great event to extend the flying season and share the sky with fellow modelers from the south east!  Big Thank You to Dino DiGiorgio Jr. for hosting this great event!
