Scale Flyers of Minnesota

We're dedicated to sharing experiences building and flying radio controlled miniature replicas of full-sized aircraft. Our membership draws from all of the R/C clubs in the Twin Cities area. Every year during the summer, the Scale Flyers collaborate with local R/C clubs to sponsor or support various scale fly-ins and a Scale Masters Qualifier.

Throughout the winter on the last Friday of the month, (from October-March), the Scale Flyers hold meetings at the American Legion Post in Richfield, Minnesota. The meetings start promptly at 7:00PM.  Come early and dine at the Legion Hall restaurant. Anyone with an interest in aviation is welcome to attend, though the meetings tend to focus on radio-controlled aircraft and in particular scale subjects.

Our Members & Meetings

During the meetings we discuss building, finishing, detailing, scale documentation, flying techniques and other methods unique to scale modeling.  Our scale programs have included panel-line detailing, airbrushing, weathering, insignia painting, scale documentation research, static-judging, scratch building, plan drafting, model selection, retract installation, lettering, and more.  One of the highlights of most meetings is a chance for members to bring their projects to the meeting so that meeting participants can see what members are working on, whether it is a completed aircraft or one just in the “bones”.

Scale Flyers has several members who have won or placed in the AMA NATS, competed in Top Gun and/or Scale Master Invitational’s throughout the country. Our members and their aircraft have appeared in Model Aviation, Model Airplane News, R/C Report, Jet International, Scale International as well as other magazines.

The airplanes flown by the Scale Flyers of Minnesota are, in fact, real airplanes ... reproduced in miniature. Because so many historically important airplanes no longer exist in full-size form, the sport, art, craft and science of scale modeling is alone in preserving their images in the sky.
